Author’s Note: After Dith Pran escaped from Cambodia in late 1979, he became a successful news photographer for The New York Times. When The Killing Fields film was made of his story of captivity and my search for him, he also became an international crusader for his Cambodian people—and for all people who suffer and die in wars and genocides. He was a peacemaker. He was endeared around the world. After twenty-eight happy years at The Times, he was suddenly seized by pancreatic cancer and died on Sunday, March 30, 2008—at the age of sixty-five—with friends and Buddhist monks and all his family around him. He will not be forgotten. He will always be my brother.
